The Tipping Confusion
Tipping wedding vendors is one of the most confusing aspects of wedding budgeting. Some vendors expect it, some don't. Some include a service charge (which may or may not go to the staff). Some own their business (does an owner get tipped?). Here's a clear breakdown.
General Rule
Tip service providers who work your event. Don't tip business owners (they set their own prices) unless they provided exceptional service. When in doubt, a heartfelt thank-you note is always appropriate.
Vendor-by-Vendor Guide
Catering Staff / Servers
Tip: $20 to $50 per server, $50 to $100 for the captain or head server
Note: Check your contract first. Many catering companies include a 18 to 22 percent service charge. If it's labeled "service charge," ask whether it goes to the staff. If it does, additional tipping is optional. If it goes to the company, tip the staff separately.
Bartenders
Tip: $25 to $50 per bartender, or 10 to 15 percent of the bar total
Note: Place a small sign at the bar saying "Gratuity has been taken care of" to prevent guests from tipping individually (which can slow service).
DJ
Tip: $50 to $150
Note: If the DJ is the business owner, a tip is optional but appreciated for exceptional performance.
Band
Tip: $25 to $50 per musician, $50 to $100 for the band leader
Photographer
Tip: $50 to $200 for the lead, $25 to $100 for the second shooter
Note: Many photographers own their business. A glowing online review can be worth more than a cash tip for business owners.
Videographer
Tip: $50 to $100
Florist
Tip: Not expected. A thank you note is appropriate. If the delivery team does setup, $10 to $20 per person.
Officiant
Tip: $50 to $100 for a hired officiant. For religious officiants, a donation to their house of worship is traditional.
Hair and Makeup
Tip: 15 to 20 percent of the service cost, per artist
Transportation (Limo, Bus, Shuttle)
Tip: 15 to 20 percent of the total, or $25 to $50 per driver
Wedding Planner / Coordinator
Tip: Not expected if they own the business. For employed coordinators, $50 to $200 or a thoughtful gift.
Venue Staff
Tip: $20 to $50 per staff member who worked your event (setup crew, venue coordinator, attendants)
How to Deliver Tips
- Prepare labeled envelopes in advance ("DJ," "Lead Server," etc.)
- Put a trusted person (best man, coordinator, or parent) in charge of distributing them
- Deliver tips at the end of the event or the next business day
- Include a brief thank-you note in each envelope
Budgeting for Tips
Add 5 to 10 percent of your total wedding budget for tips. For a $30,000 wedding, budget $1,500 to $3,000 for gratuities. Include this in your initial budget, not as an afterthought.
