Summer weddings in Pennsylvania mean sunshine and long days, but also heat and humidity. Here's how to keep your guests comfortable and your day beautiful.

Pennsylvania Summers Are Hot

July and August in southeastern PA bring temperatures of 85 to 95 degrees with humidity that makes it feel hotter. This doesn't mean you can't have a summer wedding. It means you need to plan for the heat instead of pretending it won't matter.

Timing Is Everything

  • Late afternoon ceremony (5:00 to 6:00 PM): The worst heat passes by 4:00 PM. A 5:00 PM ceremony catches the beginning of golden hour without the midday sun.
  • Evening reception: An evening reception that runs 7:00 PM to midnight lets guests enjoy the cooler nighttime temperatures.
  • Avoid noon to 3:00 PM: This is the hottest window. If your ceremony is before 3:00, ensure it's indoors or in full shade.

Venue Selection for Summer

  • Air conditioning is non-negotiable: A venue without reliable AC in July is asking for trouble. Fans won't cut it for a 3-hour reception.
  • Shade for outdoor portions: If any part of your event is outdoors, there must be shade (trees, tents, covered porches).
  • Indoor/outdoor flow: The best summer venues allow guests to move between air-conditioned interiors and outdoor spaces freely.

Guest Comfort Strategies

  • Fans: Provide handheld fans at outdoor ceremonies (they double as programs).
  • Water stations: Infused water (cucumber-mint, lemon-berry) at the ceremony entrance and throughout the reception.
  • Shade structures: If the ceremony is outside, consider renting a tent or sailcloth for shade.
  • Cold towels: Chilled towelettes in a cooler near the ceremony entrance are a thoughtful touch.
  • Bug spray: For evening outdoor events, provide insect repellent wipes or citronella candles.

Summer Menu Ideas

  • Cold appetizers: shrimp cocktail, bruschetta, chilled soup shooters
  • Light entrees: grilled fish, chicken with fresh herbs, seasonal salads
  • Fresh sides: corn on the cob, watermelon salad, grilled vegetables
  • Frozen desserts: gelato, ice cream sandwiches, frozen fruit pops
  • Hydrating cocktails: vodka lemonade, mojitos, sangria, rosé

Summer Dress Code

Communicate that comfort is acceptable. "Garden party attire" or "dressy casual" gives guests permission to dress for the heat. Avoid black-tie in July unless your venue is fully climate-controlled.

Photography in Summer

  • Avoid harsh midday sun for portraits (squinting, dark shadows under eyes)
  • Golden hour is later (7:00 to 8:00 PM in June/July), giving you more evening light
  • Sunset portraits can be stunning; plan for a 5-minute couple exit during the reception
