Your Month-by-Month Wedding Planning Roadmap
Planning a wedding typically takes 10 to 14 months, though some couples pull it off in six and others take two years. Regardless of your timeline, the tasks are the same. What changes is how compressed your schedule is.
This checklist assumes a 12-month planning horizon. If you're working with less time, collapse the early months but don't skip the tasks. If you have more time, spread things out and enjoy the process.
12+ Months Before
- Set your overall budget and identify funding sources
- Draft your guest list (rough count is fine)
- Research and tour wedding venues
- Book your venue and secure the date
- Choose your wedding party
- Start researching photographers and caterers
- Consider hiring a wedding planner or day-of coordinator
- If applicable, book your house of worship or ceremony officiant
10 to 12 Months Before
- Book your photographer
- Book your caterer (if not included with venue)
- Book your DJ, band, or other entertainment
- Research and book your florist
- Start shopping for wedding attire
- Research honeymoon destinations and begin booking travel
- Create your wedding website
- Set up a gift registry
8 to 10 Months Before
- Send save-the-date cards
- Order wedding attire (allow four to six months for bridal gown)
- Book hair and makeup artist (schedule a trial)
- Book transportation (limo, shuttle, classic car)
- Research and book a videographer (if desired)
- Begin planning ceremony details: readings, music, vows
- If writing your own vows, start drafting
6 to 8 Months Before
- Order invitations and stationery
- Finalize your guest list
- Plan the rehearsal dinner: venue, menu, guest list
- Book accommodations for out-of-town guests (block rooms at nearby hotels)
- Schedule dress fittings
- Select and book a wedding cake baker
- Apply for your marriage license (check your state's timing requirements)
- Begin planning ceremony music and reception playlist
4 to 6 Months Before
- Mail invitations (six to eight weeks before the wedding)
- Finalize ceremony and reception details with venue
- Choose and order wedding bands
- Plan welcome bags for out-of-town guests
- Finalize menu and schedule a tasting with caterer
- Arrange wedding party attire: suits, dresses, accessories
- Book any rentals not included with venue: chairs, linens, dance floor, lighting
- Purchase wedding favors (or decide to skip them)
2 to 4 Months Before
- Track RSVPs (follow up with non-responders two weeks after the RSVP date)
- Create the seating chart
- Write and practice vows
- Finalize day-of timeline and share with all vendors
- Schedule final dress fitting
- Plan honeymoon details: flights, accommodations, activities
- Purchase gifts for wedding party
- Arrange for marriage license pickup
1 Month Before
- Confirm all vendor details: arrival times, load-in, contacts
- Finalize seating chart and place cards
- Submit final headcount to caterer and venue
- Break in wedding shoes (wear them around the house)
- Prepare vendor payments and tips in labeled envelopes
- Schedule the rehearsal and confirm all participants
- Assign day-of tasks to trusted friends or your coordinator
- Get a haircut or color touch-up (not the week of, in case of disaster)
1 Week Before
- Confirm the rehearsal dinner plan
- Pack for the honeymoon
- Assemble the emergency kit: safety pins, stain remover, sewing kit, pain reliever, phone chargers, breath mints, tissues, cash
- Lay out all wedding day items: attire, accessories, rings, license, vows
- Delegate social media and photo-collection duties to a trusted friend
- Eat well, sleep well, and limit alcohol
Day Before
- Attend the rehearsal
- Host or attend the rehearsal dinner
- Deliver final payments and tips to your coordinator or best man for distribution
- Charge all devices
- Lay out everything you need for the morning
- Go to bed at a reasonable hour
Wedding Day
- Eat breakfast (seriously)
- Follow the timeline your coordinator distributed
- Delegate problems to your coordinator or wedding party. Today is not the day for you to solve logistics.
- Take a private moment with your partner before or after the ceremony
- Dance, eat, drink, laugh, and remember that every single person in the room is there because they love you
After the Wedding
- Send thank-you notes within three months (ideally within one month)
- Preserve your wedding dress if desired
- Handle name change paperwork: Social Security, driver's license, bank accounts, passport
- Review and store your wedding photos and video
- Write reviews for vendors who did exceptional work
- Enjoy being married
