Writing wedding thank you notes? Here's a practical guide to what to say, when to send them, and how to make each one feel personal without losing your mind.

The Non-Negotiable

Thank you notes are not optional. They're one of the few truly mandatory elements of wedding etiquette. Every guest who gave a gift, every vendor who went above and beyond, and every person who traveled a significant distance to be there deserves a handwritten acknowledgment. Yes, handwritten. No, a social media post doesn't count.

The Timeline

  • Gifts received before the wedding: Send thank you notes within 2 weeks of receiving the gift.
  • Gifts received at the wedding: Send within 2 to 4 weeks after the wedding.
  • Gifts received after the wedding: Send within 2 weeks of receiving the gift.
  • The outer limit: All notes should be sent within 3 months of the wedding. Beyond that, add an apology for the delay.

What to Include

Every thank you note should include:

  1. The guest's name: Addressed personally, not generically.
  2. A specific mention of the gift: "Thank you for the beautiful cutting board" is better than "Thank you for your generous gift."
  3. How you'll use it: "We can't wait to use it for our first dinner party" shows you actually care about the gift.
  4. A personal connection: Reference something specific about their presence at the wedding or your relationship with them.
  5. A warm closing: "We're so glad you were there" or "We look forward to seeing you soon."

Sample Wording

For a Specific Gift

"Dear Tom and Lisa, Thank you so much for the gorgeous serving platter. It's exactly our style, and we've already used it twice. Having you both at the wedding meant the world to us. Your toast was one of the highlights of the night. We hope to see you soon. Love, [Names]"

For a Cash Gift

"Dear Aunt Margaret, Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gift. We're putting it toward our honeymoon fund, which means you're helping us create our first adventure as a married couple. Thank you for traveling all the way from Florida to be with us. Your presence meant everything. Love, [Names]"

For Someone Who Traveled Far

"Dear James, We were so honored that you made the trip from Seattle. Having you there, especially knowing how far you came, made the day even more special. Thank you for the beautiful photo frame. We already have our favorite wedding photo in it. Hope to see you soon, either coast. Love, [Names]"

Efficiency Tips

  • Divide and conquer: Each partner writes notes to their own side. You'll finish in half the time.
  • Set a daily goal: 5 to 10 notes per day. Don't try to do them all at once.
  • Use a tracking sheet: A spreadsheet of guests, gifts, and whether the note has been sent prevents duplicates and missed guests.
  • Pre-stamp and address: Have envelopes ready so you just need to write and stuff.
  • Start during the honeymoon: If you have downtime, write a few each day. You'll return home with a head start.

Common Questions

  • Do we need to send one if we thanked them in person? Yes. A verbal thank you at the reception is expected. A written note is the formal acknowledgment.
  • What if we don't know who gave a cash gift? Check the card or envelope. If truly anonymous, you can't send a note, but try to figure it out.
  • Do we send notes to the wedding party? Yes, absolutely. A personal note plus a small gift is standard.
  • Email or text instead? No. Handwritten only. This is the last stand of handwritten correspondence, and it matters.

After the Thank You Notes

Once the notes are sent, your wedding admin is officially complete. Take a breath. You did it. The celebration at The Museum at Hoppenville (or wherever you said your vows) is now a memory preserved not just in photos, but in the gratitude you shared with everyone who was part of it.
