Pennsylvania is a destination wedding location for couples across the East Coast. Here's how to plan a PA wedding when you don't live here.

Pennsylvania as a Destination

When people think "destination wedding," they think beaches and vineyards. But Pennsylvania is quietly one of the most popular destination wedding states on the East Coast. It's within driving distance of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. It offers diverse venue options (farms, barns, historic estates, wineries, mountain lodges), and it's significantly more affordable than the metro areas that surround it.

For couples based in NYC, DC, or anywhere in the northeastern corridor, a Pennsylvania wedding gives you a destination feel without the destination price tag or the travel burden on guests.

Planning from a Distance

Virtual Venue Tours

Most PA venues offer video tours and virtual walkthroughs. These are useful for narrowing your list, but plan at least one in-person visit before booking. Photos and video can't capture atmosphere, sound, and the feeling of a space.

Local Vendor Coordination

Work with vendors who are experienced with the venue. A caterer, photographer, and florist who know the property will handle logistics more smoothly than vendors who are seeing it for the first time on your wedding day. Ask your venue for preferred vendor lists.

Communication

Establish clear communication rhythms with your venue and vendors: monthly check-ins by phone or video, email for detailed questions, and a shared document or planning app for timeline and checklist tracking.

Guest Travel and Accommodations

  • Hotel blocks: Reserve blocks at 2 to 3 hotels near the venue at different price points. Negotiate group rates (usually available for 10+ rooms).
  • Transportation: Consider a shuttle from hotel to venue and back. Guests who've been drinking need a safe ride. Budget $500 to $1,500 for a bus or van.
  • Welcome bags: For out-of-town guests, a small bag at the hotel with local snacks, a schedule of events, and useful information (venue directions, restaurant recommendations).
  • Activities: Suggest local attractions for guests arriving early or staying late. Wine trails, historic towns, hiking, and local restaurants.

PA Wedding Logistics

Marriage License

Pennsylvania requires couples to obtain a marriage license from any county Register of Wills office. You do not need to be a PA resident. Apply in person, and there's a 3-day waiting period after issuance. The license is valid for 60 days and can be used anywhere in the state.

No Self-Uniting Marriage

Pennsylvania does allow self-uniting marriages (no officiant required). This is a Quaker tradition recognized in PA law. If you want to officiate your own ceremony, PA is one of the few states that allows it.

Weather Planning

PA weather varies significantly by season and region. For venues in southeastern PA (Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, Lancaster counties), expect:

  • Spring (April-May): 55 to 75F, occasional rain
  • Summer (June-August): 75 to 90F, humid, afternoon storms possible
  • Fall (September-November): 50 to 75F, foliage peaks mid-October
  • Winter (December-March): 30 to 45F, snow possible
